A man accused of leading law enforcement on a 50-mile car chase and stealing an Anderson County Deputy’s car appeared in court Thursday afternoon.In Anderson County, 23-year-old Theodore Montejo was charged with two counts of failure to stop for blue lights and grand larceny. An Anderson County judge said he could receive up to 16 years in prison.His bond was set at $45,000, but he will be released to Oconee County to face charges for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, leaving the scene of an accident involving an unattended vehicle, and two counts of malicious injury to property if he posts bond.Officials say Wednesday’s chase and the two car accidents involved injured an Anderson County Deputy and a South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper. It resulted in five totaled Anderson County Deputy vehicles.South Carolina Highway Patrol said it all started around 9:15 Wednesday night when troopers attempted to pull Montejo over for speeding on I-85 near exit 49. They say he refused to pull over, and so troopers attempted to box him in. They say Montejo rammed a trooper’s car and then sideswiped it twice as he drove away.That’s when the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Anderson Police, Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, Hart County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Natural Resources responded as backup, according to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.Chasing him down Interstate 85 to mile marker 15, a police report said he crashed into a tractor-trailer, ran from the crash, and stole a deputy’s car, crashing again near mile marker 1 at the Georgia line. The report said he got out of the car and ran again toward Lake Hartwell.He was finally arrested after K9 officers caught him. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries.
